Bakery Style Frosting

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 cup Vegetable shortning (I use Crisco Golden)
  • 4 & 1/2 cups Icing sugar
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 2 – 4 tbsp heavy cream (35%)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa (if making chocolate frosting)

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl of a standing mixer or in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer, blend the butter and shortening on low speed.
  • Gradually add about half of the icing sugar (and half the cocoa if making chocolate frosting). Keep the mixer on low when adding additional ingredients, but you may increase the speed to medium when blending.
  • Blend in the vanilla, salt and 2 tablespoons of the heavy cream.
  • Gradually add the rest of the icing sugar (and cocoa) and mix very well until the frosting is smooth. If necessary, add additional cream to desired consistency.
