Close to my Heart
When I first happened upon the works of Christopher Gorey, I was immediately transported “back home”. I was born and raised on Cape Breton Island and spent a great deal of my summers traveling around the Mainland and the Island with my grandparents. We would take road trips and sometimes stop along the way to visit relatives in exotic places like Port Hood (where we had to walk through a field of cows to get to the beach) or see the Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse. I moved to Toronto in my twenties, but Cape Breton will always be home in my heart. Even now, thirty years later, I still get homesick!
Looking through the collections on Mr. Gorey’s website is like taking one last trip with my grandparents. Such great memories came flooding back as I looked through the many paintings. I was seeing the landscapes of my youth, once again…done with such love and skill.
Fun Fact about Christopher Gorey
His illustrations grace the pages of “The Mad Painter of Cape Breton Island”. This is a realistic, but whimsical children’s book written by Charles Sperry which follows the misadventures of Charlie who loves a very special colour blue house paint. The book’s characters are based directly on community residents who had no problem allowing Mr. Gorey to capture their images for his illustrations.
A few of my favorite of watercolours depicting scenes from NS by Christopher Gorey.
